Samsung HW-C450 Soundbar

Samsung HW-C450 Soundbar Review

Samsung HW-C450 Soundbar

We purchased this sound bar to make up for the lack of good sound coming from our PN58B860 Samsung Plasma. The speakers in the TV sound tiny and are not really good at all. We took a chance buying the Samsung sound bar to enhance the TV sound while not always running our home theater setup. Overall the quality from the sound bar is good. The sound is MUCH better than the TV speakers. Our remote controls the volume on the sound bar which is a bonus. The sound bar also comes on automatically. Things I don't like are: 1. If you try turning up the volume and the signal gets picked up by the TV, it will say Not Available in a big caution box on the TV, blocking most of the picture for about 5 seconds. That is annoying and should really be fixed in the next firmware upgrade when external speakers are used. 2. The sound bar will turn off automatically when you turn off the TV but there is a huge delay, like 20 mins. I don't understand that. It also takes about 5 seconds longer to power on when the TV comes on. Other than that, to us it was worth the cost to get better sound but honestly TV makers should focus more on that with the TV since we so much money on our plasma. Hope this helps.

Yamaha YSP-900 Digital Sound Projector (Black)

Yamaha YSP-900 Digital Sound Projector (Black) Review

Yamaha YSP-900 Digital Sound Projector (Black)

I usually care about my audio equipment to be the best my money can buy, although I do not consider myself to be an "audiophile". I do spend more than 0 for my PC speakers, and I have spent more than ,000 in high-end speakers in the past, but for my new LCD TV, I wanted something that was easy to set-up, yet gave me decent sound to enjoy. I heard about this new sound bar technology from Yamaha, so I gave it a try. I purchased a YSP-800 (the previous generation of YSP-900) to go with my 40" LCD TV. I originally was going to get a 7.1 surround system from Onkyo, but the thought of wires and cables running around the floor just gave me shudders, and even if I reduced the number of speakers down to 5, I'd still have to run wires across the room from the system, and around and behind the couch. I just didn't feel like cluttering the room with wires, and YSP-800 was the perfect answer for that.

For the sound, YSP-800 is amazing. I don't know how it really is doing it, but the rear channel sound actually sounds like coming from behind. And, the weird thing is the left and right channels just seems like coming from the left and right extremes, rather than from the sound bar location. My dog seems to be fooled by the YSP-800's phantom surround, and when the movie makes a big noise in the left direction, my dog and I turn to the left! The channel separation is really that good.

I've listened to two other sound bar systems before I made the purchase, and those are ones from Polk Audio and Philips. Both of them really gives you "virtual surround" but not actual 5.1 channel surround sound. They do a good job of giving you a feel that the sound is "surrounding" you, but not quite the same experience as the ones you get from YSPs.

The only complaint for YSPs, if at all, is the lack of bass. Of course this can be easily remedied by adding a subwoofer, but it would have been nice if a decent woofer was built-in to this unit.

So all in all, if you are even mildly interested in this unit because of the less clutter, but concerned about the sound quality and effectiveness of surround sound, I'd say you absolutely have nothing to worry about. The reason why these sound bars are not cheap is because it does provide great sound without complicated and cluttering wires. So give these YSPs a try, you won't be disappointed.

Sony Virtual 5.1 Channel Sound Bar - Black (HTCT150)

Sony Virtual 5.1 Channel Sound Bar - Black (HTCT150) Review

Sony Virtual 5.1 Channel Sound Bar - Black (HTCT150)

i was really skeptical about going with a sound bar at first, but all of those thoughts were out the window as soon as the system got broken in (about 1 or 2 day period to fully break in the system). coming from the traditional 5.1 systems (have had systems ranging from home theater in a box-type of setups to bose lifestyle 5.1's to martin logan set ups), i was really surprised at how well this 1 speaker set up simulated "surround sound". i found myself looking over my shoulder every now and then, while watching movies, because i was hearing things from alot of different places, other than just in front of me. the CT150 was supposed to be a temporary set up for me, but after about a month of use, i'm really considering sticking to soundbars. the simplicity and ergonomics just cannot be compared to by big, traditional 5.1 systems.

as for sound quality, the vocals are nice and crisp. i know the CT100 had a vocal problem, but i can hear everything crystal clear on my CT150 (center channel set at +5). i have my CT150 in a very open living room (about 20x35), so i have my subwoofer level set at +5 (settings go from -6 to +6). the bass levels would be comparable to my bose lifestyle 25 system, with the CT150 having a slight bass advantage. all in all, a great little package. i really couldn't think of a better, more ergonomic set up for a smaller living room or bedroom. i might just stick with soundbars from now on and just upgrade to bigger/better soundbar set ups.
